The magnificent spires of the 12th-century Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia now have a new gateway welcoming travelers from around the globe.

With a long runway able to accommodate large aircraft, the $1.1 billion airport was strategically constructed to replace the former gateway that required lengthy overland transfers. The ambitious project broke ground in 2020 with future growth in mind. Once complete, the airport will handle over 7 million passengers annually, enabling Cambodia to welcome even more visitors to its renowned cultural treasure.

Sophea Lim, a local tour guide in Siem Reap, sees the new airport as a big step forward. “This will make visits more convenient for travelers of all ages and allow them to save time and energy for exploring the temples.”

For many Cambodians, promoting sustainable tourism at Angkor Wat also has deep cultural significance. Long Them, a restaurant owner, said “The new airport honors our greatest ancestors who built Angkor Wat centuries ago. I’m proud it will share our national heritage with people from around the world.”

Officials anticipate the airport will attract 500,000 additional foreign visitors in its first year alone, providing a major boost to Cambodia’s tourism-reliant economy following declines during the pandemic. Chann Sinath, a tuk-tuk driver, is already feeling positive effects with more clients anticipated. “This airport means more business and being able to better provide for my family,” he said.

With this modern new portal, the country is opening pathways both back in time and forward towards sustainable growth.
