In a world where culinary adventures are becoming increasingly sought-after, Zimbabwe is poised to stake its claim as a gastronomic gem. The nation’s unwavering commitment to showcasing its rich culinary heritage has captured the attention of the global tourism community, as revealed by Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi.

“Zimbabwe is determined to grow its gastronomy tourism, a sub-type of tourism where people visit countries to sample exotic cuisine,” Rwodzi declared, underscoring the country’s ambition to tantalize taste buds from around the world. This bold pursuit has not gone unnoticed. In a resounding vote of confidence, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has bestowed upon Zimbabwe the honor of hosting the inaugural UN Tourism Africa Gastronomy Conference later this year. This prestigious event will serve as a platform to celebrate the continent’s diverse culinary traditions and position Zimbabwe as a frontrunner in the burgeoning gastronomy tourism sector.

But the accolades don’t stop there. The UNWTO has further recognized Zimbabwe’s potential by granting the country the opportunity to establish a UN Tourism Academy in the picturesque resort city of Victoria Falls. This academy will cater to the entire African continent, nurturing the next generation of culinary and tourism professionals, and equipping them with the skills to showcase Africa’s rich tapestry of flavors to the world. Rwodzi’s remarks came during the first provincial traditional cookout competition in Harare Province, where 20 contestants vied for culinary supremacy, showcasing their mastery of traditional dishes that have been passed down through generations.

As the world’s appetite for authentic cultural experiences continues to grow, Zimbabwe’s embrace of gastronomy tourism positions it as a trailblazer in this burgeoning sector. By leveraging its diverse culinary heritage and forging partnerships with global organizations like the UNWTO, the nation is poised to captivate the palates of food enthusiasts worldwide, offering a feast for the senses that celebrates the rich tapestry of African cuisine.
