The South African Department of Tourism has partnered with tech giant Google in an agreement aimed at leveraging technology to market South African tourism globally.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille signed a memorandum of understanding with Google’s country director for South Africa, Dr. Alistair Mokoena, finalizing the collaboration.

Minister de Lille highlighted the potential for partnerships between government and tech leaders to reshape industries through digital transformation. The deal aligns with the Tourism Sector Green Paper’s goal of supporting tourism SMEs in adapting to technological changes.

Initiatives could include training for tourism operators on digital skills and online presence development. Google’s reach and insights will help showcase South African attractions to potential visitors worldwide.

Augmented reality tours, AI-optimized itineraries, and other innovations could also allow travelers to deeply engage with South African culture and heritage through immersive digital experiences.

For tourism SMEs, Google can share data and best practices on connecting with travelers in the digital space. Many lack the resources or capabilities to fully capitalize on online marketing and tech-driven experiences.

The collaboration will support South Africa’s goal of building a thriving, sustainable tourism industry that spreads benefits widely. By closing the digital divide, Google’s support ensures businesses both large and small can compete in the global tourism marketplace.

Minister de Lille stated the partnership can reshape and reinvigorate South African tourism by empowering players with technology. Google’s global reach and digital expertise, when combined with South Africa’s spectacular natural and cultural offerings, are sure to captivate and inspire travelers worldwide.
