Saudi Arabia is turbocharging tourism growth in the historic region of AlUla through a $215 million expansion of the AlUla International Airport. With the addition of a glamorous second terminal, the airport’s capacity will soar from 400,000 annual passengers currently to a projected 6 million upon completion in 2026.

The major infrastructure investment aims to transform AlUla into a dynamic cultural tourism hub as Saudi Arabia opens up to the world. Located in the Kingdom’s northwestern desert, AlUla contains Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site – the sprawling 2,000 year-old Nabataean rock tombs of Hegra.

Yet AlUla’s fascinating history spans millennia, evidenced by over 20,000 ancient archaeological sites nestled amidst stunning sandstone formations. The region served as the capital for the ancient Lihyanite kingdom and later as an important trading post on incense and spice routes.

“Upgrading AlUla’s airport enables us to welcome more global travelers to discover the area’s ancient stories and breathtaking landscapes,” said Amr AlMadani, CEO of the Royal Commission for AlUla.

The new terminal’s glitzy design envisages an oasis-like ambience with indoor gardens and flowing water features reflecting AlUla’s natural beauty. Passengers can relax in a luxury hotel and spa or shop high-end boutiques showcasing local arts and crafts.

Outdoors, date palm groves and rock formations surround the airport’s golden sandstone façade. Inside, a mix of earth tones, handicrafts, and abstract art create an inviting hub where travelers transition into AlUla’s distinctive setting.

Alongside boosting airport capacity, Saudi Arabia aims to build up to 100 hotels in AlUla by 2035 as it emerges as an arts and culture destination. With massive music festivals already held at unique venues like the mirrored Maraya Concert Hall, AlUla is gearing up to offer bespoke resort experiences blending heritage and hospitality.

The airport expansion complements train, public transit, and highway links also enhancing AlUla’s accessibility. As more of Saudi Arabia’s treasures open up for sustainable tourism, AlUla is sure to capture imaginations as a model of reinventing the future while honoring the past.
