RwandAir Suspends Flights to Mumbai, Citing Route Optimization
Kigali, Rwanda – RwandAir has announced it will suspend all flights between Kigali and Mumbai starting March 15th, as the carrier continues to refine and optimize its routes.
The airline’s acting Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Best Owie, confirmed the upcoming cancellation and explained the rationale behind it. “RwandAir started this route seven years ago, and has continuously sought new ways to improve service delivery. The need to source and deploy the right product for our esteemed passengers has necessitated this suspension for now,” he stated.
Owie emphasized that RwandAir is constantly assessing its network to align with customer demand and business priorities. “We have the right network optimization strategy in place. This has no wider effect on our operations,” he assured.

Industry experts note that long-haul routes like Kigali-Mumbai can be difficult for smaller carriers like RwandAir to maintain year-round. “The costs and aircraft requirements are substantial. It makes sense for the airline to focus on more profitable routes within Africa for now,” said aviation analyst Simon Musasizi.
Passengers holding RwandAir tickets for Mumbai flights after March 15th are advised to contact the airline directly to arrange refunds or rebooking options. The airline has apologized for any inconvenience caused by the abrupt suspension.
While RwandAir is pulling out of Mumbai for the time being, Musasizi believes the carrier will continue growing strategically. “This adjustment doesn’t signal plans to scale back operations overall. It’s about playing to RwandAir’s strengths in Africa for sustainable expansion.”
The suspension highlights the challenges airlines face keeping long-haul routes viable and competitive. By making fleet and network optimizations, RwandAir aims to keep delivering positive customer experiences and cementing its position as a leader on the continent.
