DENVER, Nov. 5, 2026 — More than 1.25 million Coloradans voted to protect girls' sports by approving Proposition 134, the Protect Girls' Sports Act. The measure requires school and college teams to be designated male, female, or coed, and reserves girls' and women's teams for female athletes only.

Athletes for Action (A4A), an organization of female athletes, coaches, and parents, partnered with Protect Kids Colorado and ran a statewide campaign of ads featuring Colorado girls telling their stories of competing against boys.

"My husband and I are raising daughters here. Because of Colorado voters, they'll get the same fair shot I had as a young athlete. No girl in Colorado should lose a spot, a podium, or a scholarship to a male competitor - not ever," said Megan Kaltenbach Burke, co-founder of A4A.

Colorado was not alone. On election night, voters in Washington, Arizona, and Nebraska approved measures keeping girls' sports for girls. Colorado and Washington both lean Democratic, and the results show that fairness for girls is not a partisan issue.

"Colorado supporters put this measure on the ballot one signature at a time, and voters finished the job. This is a win for every girl in this state," said Erin Lee, founder of Protect Kids Colorado.

"To every girl who told us 'it happened to me': Colorado heard you," said Paula Scanlan, co-founder of A4A and a former NCAA Division I swimmer at the UPenn. "Opponents outspent us nearly 20 to 1. Colorado voted for fairness anyway."

Proposition 134 takes effect January 1, 2027. Governor-elect Phil Weiser said Wednesday the legislature should consider "adjustments" to the measure, warning against full-body examinations of student athletes.

"Prop 134 doesn't require a physical exam - that is a false narrative. Coloradans made a clear choice, and we urge Mr. Weiser and the legislature to respect it, just as we respect the very same democratic process that got him elected," Lee added.
