New Rubavu Port Set to Boost Rwanda-Congo Trade and Tourism

A new port on the shores of Lake Kivu in Rwanda is nearing completion and set to open in December 2023, providing a major boost to cross-border trade and tourism.

The Rubavu port, located in Rubavu District along Rwanda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the newly constructed Rubavu Port on the shores of Lake Kivu in Nyamyumba Sector is currently 96% finished according to district officials. Rubavu District Acting Mayor Déogratias Nzabonimpa stated that a provisional handover is scheduled for November 30th.

Spanning 2 hectares, Rubavu will be Rwanda’s largest port. It is strategically positioned to facilitate trade flows between Rwanda and DRC across Lake Kivu. The $7.8 million project is also expected to spur new tourism growth for the region.

The port will feature separate cargo and passenger terminals. It can handle an estimated 1.4 million travelers annually, providing new opportunities for tourism expansion between the two countries.

Rwanda’s government developed the port with support from development partners including TradeMark Africa and Invest International. Tunisaian engineering firm SCET oversaw construction of the modern new facilities.

Beyond cargo and passenger quays, the project includes a two-story administrative building housing offices, restaurants, and security checkpoints. With the December opening imminent, the first ships are set to access the port on December 1st.

As a key gateway between Rwanda and DRC, the strategically located Rubavu port will strengthen commercial ties and mobility. With its enhanced capacity, stakeholders also see potential for expanded tourism and economic growth for communities on both shores of the majestic Lake Kivu.
