A new report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reveals that Africa’s travel and tourism sector could see enormous growth over the next decade. With the right policies in place, the sector could contribute over $168 billion to the continent’s economy and create more than 18 million new jobs by 2032.

The report, “Unlocking Opportunities for Travel & Tourism Growth in Africa,” highlights the sector’s current economic impact and its future potential. In 2019, travel and tourism contributed $186 billion to Africa’s economy and supported 25 million jobs. The sector has shown resilience, recovering well from challenges like the 2008 financial crisis, disease outbreaks, and political instability.

According to WTTC’s projections, Africa’s travel sector is on pace for a near-full recovery in 2023 following COVID-19 setbacks. If the recommended policy actions are implemented, the sector could grow by 6.5% annually over the next ten years. By 2032, its total economic contribution could reach $350 billion.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, emphasized Africa’s travel sector growth in the past two decades. She stated, “with the right policies, it could unlock an additional $168 billion in the next decade.” Top recommended policy priorities include streamlining visas, improving air connectivity within Africa, and unified tourism marketing campaigns.

Enhanced infrastructure and mobility between African countries could also boost intracontinental tourism. Currently, only 27% of African travel takes place within the region. There is tremendous room for growth in African tourism within Africa. The report advises national policies that view the continent as “a unified tourism destination.”

Sustainable tourism development will be key. Strategic investments in clean energy adoption, water efficiency, and reducing carbon footprints can drive environmentally friendly growth. The report also highlights opportunities to support small and medium enterprises and community-led tourism.

With these policies and long-term planning, WTTC foresees enormous potential for job creation, economic development, and sustainable tourism in Africa. The COVID pandemic showed the sector’s vulnerability but also its ability to rebound. With the right framework implemented, African travel and tourism can recover stronger than ever and become a major engine of prosperity.
