Morocco is setting its sights on the burgeoning African travel market by forging a new collaboration with Nigerian tour operator Wakanow. The Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) signed a five-year strategic deal with Wakanow, one of Africa’s top tour companies, to boost Morocco’s popularity as a destination for African tourists. The partnership aims to cement Morocco’s leadership in African tourism as the country prepares to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations.

Targeting West African travellers especially, the agreement focuses on showcasing Morocco’s cultural riches and natural wonders to new African audiences. Wakanow will develop packaged tours and promote Moroccan attractions through its platforms. For summer 2024, the partners have set a goal of attracting 5,000 Nigerian tourists through Wakanow bookings.

As Africa’s top tourist destination, Morocco draws over 12 million visitors annually. Yet most arrivals currently come from Europe, with Africans representing less than 5% of tourists. This partnership aligns with Morocco’s larger vision of strengthening economic ties within the continent.

With its strategic location as a gateway between Europe and Africa, Morocco offers accessible and rewarding experiences for regional travellers. From the markets of Marrakech to the Sahara Desert, Morocco shares cultural connections with its African neighbours. By working with an influential tour operator like Wakanow, Morocco can now cultivate new tourism and economic bonds across the continent.
