In a landmark gathering, the Middle East member states of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) came together for the 50th time, setting their sights on a future driven by innovation and strategic investments. Hosted in the picturesque city of Muscat, Oman, this historic event marked a pivotal moment for the region’s tourism industry, as high-level delegations from 13 member states, including eight Ministers of Tourism, converged to chart a course towards resilience, inclusivity, and sustainable growth.

Welcoming the delegates, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili extended a warm invitation to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Regional Commission for the Middle East, reflecting on the collective journey and remarkable achievements over the course of 50 meetings. With an unwavering commitment to propelling the region’s tourism sector to new heights, Pololikashvili provided an insightful update on the Organization’s work since the last Commission meeting in Jordan in June 2023, placing special emphasis on key priorities such as tourism education, job creation, and attracting investments.

In a resounding affirmation, the Secretary-General declared, “Now, we can confidently say that the Middle East is a true global tourism leader. Not just in terms of arrivals, but the region is influencing our sector’s development everywhere in the world. It is a hub of tourism innovation and education. And it is a leading investor, backing big ideas and ambitious projects with the power to transform tourism at every level.”

As the discussions unfolded, the member states prioritized innovation and strategic investments as the cornerstones of their future endeavors. Recognizing the rapidly evolving landscape of the tourism industry, they embraced the need to foster cutting-edge solutions, disruptive technologies, and sustainable practices that will not only enhance the visitor experience but also safeguard the region’s rich cultural heritage and natural wonders.
