Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced the resumption of direct flights between Nairobi, Kenya and Mogadishu, Somalia starting February 2024. The route renewal comes over three years after suspensions took effect in August 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic’s tightening grip. Initially Kenya Airways will restart Mogadishu services with three weekly flights beginning February 14th. Expansion to daily operation is expected by year’s end as commercial exchanges and travel demand between Kenya and Somalia continue growing post-pandemic.

In a statement, KQ’s Chief Commercial and Customer Officer Julius Thairu expressed eagerness to reestablish air links between the two capital cities. He stated this move aligns with rising bilateral business and mobility needs, which KQ is committed to serve through high-quality experiences. Historically, Kenya has maintained extensive economic ties with neighboring Somalia despite security challenges. Resumed air connectivity will likely facilitate increased Kenyan private sector engagement in Somalia’s reconstruction through trade and investment.

Somalia’s tourism potential may also entice more visitors from Kenya with the convenience of direct flights. Mogadishu offers heritage sites like the National Theatre and beaches along the Indian Ocean coastline, while the port city of Kismayo further south draws travelers.Thairu noted Kenya Airways’ network growth strategy emphasizes enhancing intra-African connectivity to spur long-term development. Mogadishu joins other recent destination additions like Cape Town, South Africa and Monrovia, Liberia as the flagship carrier extends its reach.

While continuing expansion may heighten financial pressures after KQ’s pandemic losses, the airline remains committed to linking African markets. Officials believe stitching the continent through aviation will unlock prosperity through deepened economic integration.

KQ suspended European services amidst COVID but maintained cargo flights and select Middle Eastern routes. With more bilateral connections like Mogadishu now reopening, Kenya Airways seems poised to reclaim its status as one of Africa’s leading airlines.

This month also saw KQ return to Guangzhou, China after a three-year absence as aviation rebounds globally. Through resilience and regional focus, Kenya Airways keeps climbing towards renewed profitability.
