Italy Returns Historic Airplane to Ethiopia After 87 Years

1

Addis Ababa – An emotional homecoming unfolded this week as Italy returned a historic aeroplane to Ethiopia, 87 years after it was taken during Italy’s occupation. The restored aircraft represents a powerful symbol of independence for Ethiopians. The 1935 Tsehai plane was sub-Saharan Africa’s first aircraft built domestically. “Tsehay” was the first aircraft built in Ethiopia in 1935, under the collaborative efforts of the German engineer and pilot of the emperor, Herr Ludwig Weber, and Ethiopian individuals of that era After World War II, it sat for decades in Italian museum before Ethiopian requests for repatriation succeeded.

At a handover ceremony in Rome, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed celebrated the aeroplane’s significance: “Today is a day of great pride for Ethiopians as we celebrate the official handover of “Tsehay” by the Italian Government. I extend my immense gratitude to Prime Minister @GiorgiaMeloni for her support over the past year in facilitating its return. Tsehai is testimony to the heights our forefathers reached at a time when they were considered uncivilized.”

The biplane’s journey mirrors Ethiopia’s struggle against colonization. Italy captured Tsehai in 1937 during Mussolini’s brutal conquest of Ethiopia. Thousands of cultural artefacts were looted, although Italy agreed post-war to return some stolen items.

Decades later, the sleek monoplane still stirs pride. Painted in Ethiopia’s national colours, Tsehai led the new Ethiopian Air Force against the occupying Italian air power. For Ethiopians, Tsehai embodies cherished ideals of freedom and self-determination. The country defied European colonization as the only African nation to resist total conquest.

Today, Tsehai comes home to take its place in Ethiopia’s cultural heritage. The restored aircraft will be displayed at Ethiopia’s National Museum, where it can inspire new generations with aviation dreams.

The restitution of historical artefacts like Tsehai allows Ethiopians to celebrate their history on their terms fully. As more colonial spoils are returned, Ethiopia is healing the scars of the past while looking ahead to a bright future, with Tsehai leading the way.
