Guyana Taps Into Adventure Travel Potential for Tourism Growth

Georgetown, Guyana – This South American country is setting its sights on an undiscovered adventure to boost tourism beyond eco-lodges and wildlife encounters. The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) is now conducting a comprehensive assessment of adventure travel prospects to expand visitor offerings.

GTA Director Kamrul Baksh said diversifying Guyana’s tourism product portfolio is a priority. Discussions are underway with the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) to develop sustainable adventure experiences showcasing Guyana’s natural assets and cultural gems. “We want to bring in the expertise to see exactly what potential we have and I think we have so many undiscovered gems,” remarked Baksh at a recent tourism event. An initial feasibility analysis will determine the viability of new rock climbing, caving, kayaking, and other active excursions.

As home to Kaieteur Falls, one of the world’s largest single-drop waterfalls, Guyana possesses immense possibilities for thrills from rafting to jungle trekking. Community-based tourism providers can also benefit from training to operate adventure tours sustainably.

While Guyana built its initial tourism niche around eco-lodges and wildlife like giant river otters, tapping into adventure travel is the logical next step. As Baksh noted, “That is something we are committing to ensuring that we have an initial assessment done.”

With cooperation from seasoned advisers like ATTA, Guyana can soon welcome adrenaline-seekers to experience its majestic interior and rugged coastal landscapes. By taking stock of adventure assets, Guyana is preparing to captivate visitors with nature, culture, and excitement while ensuring sustainable growth.
