Against stiff global competition, Egypt has emerged as the only African nation with villages on the newly announced UNWTO Best Tourism Villages 2023 list. The prestigious designation was awarded to the Egyptian villages of Dahshour and Siwa during the UNWTO General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on October 18th.

Out of 54 winning villages across the world, Egypt stood out as the lone representative of the African continent. This is a major achievement that demonstrates Egypt’s leadership in developing remarkable rural tourism destinations.

The villages were evaluated on criteria including cultural preservation, sustainability, infrastructure, and more. Egypt’s success proves these small communities are thriving as hubs of authentic local culture and environmentally responsible tourism.

As Africa’s sole honoree this year, Egypt has set an inspirational example for nurturing world-class tourism villages. The accolade will drive visitor numbers to Dahshour and Siwa, bringing economic prosperity and incentivizing sustainable practices.

Africa possesses immense untapped potential for community-based tourism. Egypt’s recognition lights the way for more African villages to embark on this rewarding development path. The continent is now on notice – the competition to represent Africa in future UNWTO village awards will be intense.
