Bahamas mourns passing of tourism stalwart Obie Wilchcombe at 64.

The Bahamas is grieving the loss of an iconic tourism leader following Monday’s passing of Obie Wilchcombe at age 64. Wilchcombe devoted over two decades towards building the Bahamian tourism industry as a minister and visionary policymaker.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation confirmed Wilchcombe’s death after he was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at Rand Memorial Hospital in Grand Bahama.

Wilchcombe served two impactful tenures as Minister of Tourism for the Bahamas, from 2002-2007 and 2012-2017. He presided over major expansions in visitor arrivals and global marketing outreach that cemented the Bahamas as a leading Caribbean destination.

Tourism officials stated Wilchcombe’s consultative leadership always prioritized benefiting the Bahamian people through sustainable growth. His astute management emphasized community participation to uplift residents economically and showcase authentic Bahamian culture.

At the time of his passing, Wilchcombe held several senior government roles including Minister of Social Services, Minister of Information & Broadcasting, and Leader of Government Business in the House of Assembly.

Born in West End, Grand Bahama in 1959, Wilchcombe earlier had an acclaimed career in broadcasting journalism before entering politics. His unique talents left an indelible mark on Bahamian society.

Prime Minister Philip Davis stated: “Obie was a towering figure who deeply impacted Bahamian life over decades. His tourism legacy will benefit generations to come.”. Opposition Leader Michael Pintard added: “Obie was a colossal national figure whose vision helped chart our country’s modern progress.”

The Bahamas has lost a devoted son and trailblazing leader. In honour of Obie Wilchcombe’s life of service, the journey toward development he helped set in motion will continue inspired by his legacy.
