The Angolan government has officially inaugurated the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) located outside the capital city of Luanda. The mega project cost over $3 billion to construct and will serve as the country’s primary air hub, gradually replacing Luanda’s existing Quatro de Fevereiro Airport.

The airport’s supporting infrastructure represented a substantial portion of the multi-billion dollar investment according to Angola’s Minister of Transport Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu. The government funded the initiative through public financing, which it aims to recover by concessioning the airport’s management and engaging the private sector to develop an airport city concept.

Situated approximately 40 km from central Luanda, AIAAN spans a 50 square km precinct. It features two massive asphalt runways along with a main terminal and other facilities.

The northern runway stretches an impressive 4,200 meters long, enough to accommodate the largest aircraft like the Airbus A380. The southern runway is 3,800 meters long. At 60 meters wide, both runways provide plenty of room for simultaneous take-offs and landings.

In an interview, Minister D’Abreu highlighted the airport’s strategic advantages, including the site’s optimal geographic location. Its enhanced cargo handling capabilities will also boost Angola’s export competitiveness.

With annual passenger capacity of 15 million, AIAAN gives Luanda sorely needed extra bandwidth. The existing airport has strained to keep up with Booming demand over decades of rapid growth. Angola’s need for expanded airport infrastructure was also highlighted by recent U.N. projections of continued population expansion.

AIAAN’s opening kicks off a transition period where operations will shift from the current airport to the new facilities over three phases. The $3 billion price tag underscores Angola’s commitment to investing in infrastructure to elevate its global connectivity, trade competitiveness, and tourism appeal.

As airlines relocate to AIAAN, Luanda residents will benefit from reduced aircraft noise and congestion. Not only will the new airport meet rising demand, but plentiful room for expansion leaves it well-equipped for Angola’s future growth.

Officials tout AIAAN’s opening as a major milestone that will pay dividends for connectivity, economic development and prestige. With its array of modern amenities and ample capacity, the mega airport solidifies Luanda’s role as a key African air hub.
