Airbnb Hits Record on Privacy with Global Ban on Indoor Cameras

airbnb

In a groundbreaking move that puts guest privacy front and centre, Airbnb has announced a strict new global policy banning the use of indoor security cameras at all of its rental properties worldwide. The decision comes as the vacation rental giant doubles down on efforts to build rock-solid trust with its community of travellers. The new rules, which take effect immediately, prohibit any form of indoor camera – whether visible or hidden – in bathrooms, bedrooms, and other private spaces inside Airbnb listings. Outdoor cameras and video doorbells will still be permitted but must be properly disclosed and identified to guests prior to booking.

“There’s a fine line between securing one’s home and privacy, and making guests feel uncomfortable or violated,” said Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy. “We want everyone to feel relaxed and at ease when staying in an Airbnb property. This proactive ban prioritizes what travelers value most – a sense of privacy and peace of mind.”

The ban follows a steady stream of troubling reports over the years from guests who inadvertently discovered hidden recording devices in their rentals, sparking concerns over illegal surveillance. While representing only a tiny fraction of Airbnb properties, such incidents can severely undermine trust in the platform.

With over 6 million active listings spanning 191 countries, Airbnb’s aggressive new privacy stance aims to preserve its hard-earned reputation for safety and transparency. The company thoroughly vetted the policy with privacy experts, hosts, and guests to get it right. “Our hosts overwhelmingly understand that personal privacy is sacrosanct,” said Downs. “The vast majority never considered using indoor cameras in the first place. But removing any ambiguity around this issue provides enhanced clarity and builds even more confidence in Airbnb among travelers everywhere.”

To enforce the new rules, Airbnb will leverage its sophisticated risk-scoring techniques that monitor listing descriptions, guest reports, and other data sources. Violators will face penalties up to a permanent ban from the platform. The indoor camera prohibition is the latest in a series of trust-building measures from Airbnb, which recently updated its policies around parties, included total pricing in searches, and expanded 24/7 neighbour support lines.
