“A Tribe Called Judah” Ascends as Nigeria’s New Reigning Box Office Champion

A Tribe Called Judah

Lagos – A new ruler has staked its claim to the Nigerian box office throne – the faith-based film “A Tribe Called Judah” has officially surpassed all previous domestic records, ascending to become Nigeria’s new #1 highest-grossing movie of all time.

The inspirational drama overtook the previous benchmark set by “Everything Ogere” earlier in 2022, earning over 760 million naira (approximately $1.7 million USD) thus far, and counting. “Judah” tells the story of a pastor striving to build a church in the fictional Ajeromi community against forces of evil. Through a message of unwavering faith and perseverance, the film has resonated strongly with Nigerian audiences since its Christmas Day release.

According to Executive Producer Victoria Apatira, “We are overjoyed and give God all the praise for the tremendous success of this film. It just goes to show that good content will always rule supreme, and there is an audience hungry for entertainment that also nourishes the spirit.”

The record-shattering reception underscores the immense appetite for faith-based films targeting the underserved Christian community, which comprises half of Nigeria’s population. As the country’s theatrical industry increasingly pivots towards untapped niche markets, the groundbreaking performance of “A Tribe Called Judah” ushers in a new era where niche films can rival mainstream blockbusters financially.

A biblically-inspired African cinema as producers and studios rush to capitalize on Christianity’s lucrative kingdom at the Nigerian box office.
